Saturday, March 27, 2010 ; Yuma, Arizona
Today we attended the Yuma MCAS ( Marine Corps Air Station ) 2010 Air Show. And we both got a bit sunburned. The weather was sunny, hot, and windy. Windy enough that it affected the air show. Some of the performances were rescheduled, some were modified / shortened, and a few were cancelled.
I was most impressed by the demonstration of the AV-8 Harrier jet. It combines a fighter jet with the manoeuverability of a helicopter, with VTOL ( Vertical Take Off and Landing ) and hover capabilities. I was least impressed with the smoke and flame belching jet engine equipped school bus ( rolling eyes ). There were great demonstrations of aerobatics, mostly by Pitts S-2 aircrafts. There were a lot of static ground displays of military aircraft and equipment ; big guns and tanks and those sorts of things. Americans surely do love their warfare ! The show ended with a great performance by the Patriots Jet Team, a group of four L-39 jets, with a show that reminded me of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds precision aerobatics team.
