November 27, 2020

Gloomy, cool, temperature barely above freezing, no snow on the ground.

OOOOO … risky business ! In accordance with British Columbia’s “stay home” order, we gave each other haircuts today ! Turned out okay, I guess. While the haircut Joanne gave me is not the best I’ve had, neither is it the worst. It’s certainly better than a haircut I got in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico, in 2015. HA HA HA !

November 8 to 14, 2020

Sunday ; Sunny and cold. BRRRRR !

Made crepes this morning for breakfast. First time I’ve made crepes. Turned out quite well !

Monday ; Cloudy and cool. Light snow starting in late afternoon.

Tuesday ; Penticton

Snow overnight. Cloudy and cool today.

We spent another long and tiring day in Penticton running errands. We did all of our regular replenishment shopping ; Wal-Mart, Superstore, etc. We left home around noon and returned shortly after 7 PM.

I returned the trial CPAP machine to the sleep apnea clinic. And I went shopping for a winter coat at Salvation Army and Value Village before finally buying one at Mark’s Work Wearhouse. Joanne and our neighbour/friend Jeanine have been … <ahem> … “encouraging” (read that as “nagging”) me recently to get a better winter coat than the one I have. This is the first time in many years that I have paid retail for clothing. And I certainly did experience “sticker shock” !

Wednesday ; REMEMBRANCE DAY ; LEST WE FORGET !

We observed Remembrance Day this morning watching the CBC broadcast of the National” Remembrance Day service in Ottawa. After our “early” walk Joanne did laundry. Before supper we did an aquatics exercise session. We watched Amazing Race while having supper.

Thursday ; Sunny and cold.

I went into town (Keremeos) this morning to pick up a prescription and an advertised special at the pharmacy and buy a drill bit at the hardware store. At suppertime I attended my weekly Medical Weight Management Zoom meeting. Fat School !

For three hours today, from late morning until mid-afternoon we dog sat a new neighbour’s very old, decrepit, senile, toothless, smelly, abandonment anxious Toy Poodle named Bandit. It went well. EXCEPT … <fume> … Emma decided it was SO DANGEROUS to come out of the bedroom while Bandit was in our home that when she needed to urinate, rather than walk to her litter box in the bathroom, she just climbed into her laundry hamper bed and pissed on her blankie. ****ing cat ! ! ! The little ***** certainly is capable of expressing her displeasure, n’est-ce pas ? ! ?

We had to go to sleep very early tonight because we had a planned power outage for maintenance starting at 10 PM and lasting for about three hours.

Friday ; Sunny and cold.

Reset clocks and timers, early walk, exchange books at library, pool exercise session, register for some “fat school” Zoom sessions, order a wildfire protection sprinkler system for our home, reconcile our American bank statement, e-mail exchange with my sister, …

Somewhat boring life here, in the winter, during a pandemic !

Saturday ; Sunny and cold.

<sigh> Our lives have become too mundane to justify continuing to keep a daily journal.

Bonsoir !

November 1 to 7, 2020

Sunday ; Sunny and mild, windy in the afternoon.

HMPH ! This is the date on which we usually depart for our winter home in Yuma, Arizona.

I finished resetting clocks. We went for our two daily exercise walks. Joanne did laundry. I posted my weekly blog entry. I reconciled our bank statements. I did some monthly budget planning. I “created” and cooked supper ; jerk maple Sockeye salmon. It did not turn out as well as I had expected ... <shrug>.

Monday; Sunny and mild.

WHEW … today was a long and very tiring day of running errands in Penticton. Primary reason for the trip into Penticton was to go the sleep apnea clinic to pick up a CPAP machine for a one month trial. That included a fitting for the correct type and size of mask.

Shortly after we returned home I participated in a Medical Weight Management Zoom meeting, participating in the group medical session I missed when we were on our mushroom hunting course a few weeks ago.

Tonight’s supper was a pasta dish made with the wild Coral mushrooms we picked a few weeks ago at Box Lake. This is the second time we have harvested and eaten wild Coral mushrooms, but the first time we have eaten them after freezing them. HMPH ! Two evenings in a row with dinners that were less than stellar. Note to self ; leave Coral mushrooms in forest next time we find them !

Tuesday ; Sunny and cool.

Last night I used the CPAP machine for the first time. Lasted ten minutes ! ! ! HA HA HA ! I hated it ! Nevertheless, I gave it another try in the middle of the night, and again in the morning. Three tries … still hated it ! HA HA HA ! This morning I phoned CanSleep and discussed things with the Respiratory Therapist that assisted me yesterday. I committed to giving it another try. Which I did for about fifteen minutes at the beginning of my afternoon lap. Took it off and immediately fell asleep. HA HA HA ! Not looking good for the CPAP machine !

During our early (noon) walk we stopped at the home of our neighbour/friend Jeanine and visited for awhile. Before supper we did an aquatic exercise session in the swimming pool. Over our beef pot roast dinner, and for the rest of the evening we watched the US election results. Of course ! <sigh> I’m not encouraged (at 10 PM).

Wednesday ; Overcast/gloomy, cool, heavy rain in the evening.

<sigh> Well … here we are twenty-five hours later (11 PM ) and still no US Presidential election winner ! Oh, well … at least civil war hasn’t broken out yet !

I made a decision late last night after wearing the CPAP machine for about half an hour at bedtime. NOPE ! I just don’t like it ! It’s going back. I appreciate having had the opportunity to try it out.

I had my regular weekly Medical Weight Management group therapy Zoom meeting at suppertime. While I was on my hour and a half Zoom meeting Joanne “prepped” supper’s ingredients. After my Zoom meeting was over, I cooked another Udon noodle “creation”. It’s different each time. Tonight’s version was particularly good. Well done … good team work. We watched Amazing Race while eating supper.

Early this afternoon I had about an hour phone call with the chairman of the “stalled” seniors’ housing development in Lorette, Manitoba. <sigh> They’re still struggling with financial hurdles.

Thursday ; Rain overnight. Cloudy today, light rain in the morning.

Around lunch time we went into town (Keremeos) to run some errands. Priority was flu shots at the pharmacy, and picking up prescription refills at the pharmacy. We also bought groceries at the grocery store, refilled our five gallon water jug, bought coinage at the credit union, and … bought a wonderful take home dinner at Benja Thai, the local Thai restaurant.

We went for an early walk before leaving for town. I went to the swimming pool before supper and did an aquatics exercise session by myself. Joanne stayed glued to the TV, unable to tear herself away from Trump’s “press conference”. I did my “fat school” homework, and cleaned and prepared my CPAP trial machine to be returned.

Friday ; Sunny and cool.

Early walk, late walk, prescription accounting and records keeping, month end investment updates and analyses, Bachman and Bachman (Randy and Tal) weekly online concert. <sigh> Watching endless U.S. election news coverage.

Saturday ; Cloudy and cold.

HALLELUJAH ! Can you feel the world breathe a huge sigh of relief ? And hopefulness ? Now … R.I.P. RBG.

After a late pool exercise session we watched the Biden/Harris speeches. Is it just me ? Or was that truly inspiring ?

October 25 to 31, 2020

Sunday ; Sunny and cold.

In addition to our two daily exercise walks … BRRRRR … I did part one of my obesity clinic weekly homework. With help from Joanne. Thank you, dear. I posted my weekly blog entry and did some home maintenance. I paid bills and did some investment analysis work. We watched the 60 Minutes interviews with Trump, Pence, Biden, and Harris.

Monday ; Sunny and cold. Last week’s snow was melting today.

I was up early this morning to have a phone meeting with my doctor to replenish medications, review blood pressure, and discuss my sleep apnea test. After lunch Joanne and I drove into Keremeos to run errands ; buy produce at Sanderson Farms, groceries at Buy-Low Foods, and hardware at Keremeos Home Hardware. Back at home this afternoon I removed our home’s 120 volt AC smoke alarm and replaced it with a 9 volt DC smoke alarm. Easier said than done ! I’m of the opinion that AC smoke alarms are inferior.

I accomplished my obesity clinic weekly homework today. Yesterday I prepared a detailed meal plan for today. Today I executed that plan. Joanne helped/coached. Thank you.

Tuesday ; Sunny and cold. Last week’s snow continues to melt.

I did some home maintenance today. Returned a book to the library. Did a couple of exercise walks. Did monthly computer backup and maintenance procedures.

In the evening we watched the two hour season premiere of This Is Us. Pretty powerful television !

Wednesday ; Cloudy and chilly. Snow continues to melt.

Kind of a lazy day. Chores/errands/projects done. Should be finalizing “depart for Yuma” preparations ! <sigh>

Went for a couple of exercise walks. Had my weekly “fat school” Zoom meeting.

Thursday ; Sunny and mild. Last week’s snow finished melting.

Another lazy day. Exercise walk. Pool exercise session. Bit of work on the minivan. Medical weight management/obesity clinic/"fat school" homework. Reading a Jack Reacher novel. Snoozing with Emma.

Friday ; Sunny and mild.

This evening we watched the documentary movie “All In : The Fight For Democracy”, detailing the history of voter suppression in America, and highlighting the gubernatorial election in Georgia in 2018 when Stacey Abrams “lost” to Brian Kemp. Yes, yes, I feel as if I have been “educated” somewhat. And it has reinforced my growing prejudices about Merkins !

Saturday ; Hallowe’en

Sunny and mild. I trimmed my beard outside at the picnic table today. Last time I’ll be able to do that until about April. We went for an exercise walk around noon, and a pool exercise session around suppertime. I retrieved and printed month end bank statements and investment updates. After supper we watched Saturday Night Live. And I reset clocks.
