August 19 to 25, 2012

Sunday ; And yet another sunny, very hot day !

This morning I prepared myself a picnic lunch and at noon headed for Princeton for the final day of the Princeton Traditional Music Festival. I stopped at Bromley Rock Provincial Park intending to have my picnic lunch there but it was so crowded I didn't stay. I drove to Princeton, got myself comfortably set up near one of the two stages, and leisurely ate my lunch listening to music.

I spent the entire afternoon at the music festival, until it ended at 5:30 PM. Unfortunately, none of the many performances I attended today were as good as yesterday's. And about five minutes into the final performance, a violent thunderstorm blew in over the mountains surrounding the town of Princeton, the skies abruptly opened up and a torrential rainfall came down for about ten or fifteen minutes. The stage, performers, and most of the audience were underneath a large tent canopy, but with the strong winds the rain was moving almost horizontally. Everybody and everything got wet ! But ... it was over quickly, and the show went on ... such as it was !

I did some grocery shopping in Princeton before returning home. Supper was very late, for the second night in a row, and bedtime was even later. WOW ... my workload certainly is a lot larger when Joanne is not here. This evening I received an e-mail that she has arrived safely in Winnipeg. WHEW ... long ( two day ) bus trip !

Monday ; WHEW ... still sunny and hot. Coming to an end soon, though, I think.

This afternoon I went into Keremeos to run a couple of errands, then headed to Osoyoos for an aviation medical. My aviation medical examiner is a retired Osoyoos doctor who still does aviation medical examinations out of his lovely waterfront home. After my aviation medical examination I did a bit of grocery shopping in Osoyoos before returning home.

Princeton on Saturday, Princeton on Sunday, Osoyoos on Monday, Joanne gone to Winnipeg, so I have to cook and clean up by myself, ... I'm not getting much done on my "to do" list.

Tuesday ; It's finally cooled down. And from mid-afternoon until mid-evening it rained intermittently but heavily. Summer thunderstorms. That really interrupted and impeded the "home improvement" project that I was working on. I was cutting a piece of Plexiglas as a window vent panel for our portable air conditioner. I’ve never worked with Plexiglas before. It’s tough to cut, especially when cutting an oblong shaped opening in it. I got quite a bit of help from my next door neighbour. The finished product is very good.

Today I also took pictures of lot 89 now that the trailer is off it, and posted the “bare lot” pictures on our online ads to sell lot 89. I harvested lettuce just before lunch, and used it to make a shrimp salad. I harvested our lettuce yesterday and today, and there is still quite a bit more to harvest. BUT ... perhaps because of the very hot weather lately, the lettuce is not great.

This evening I watched a couple of firefighting helicopters with buckets at the end of long lines underneath, repeatedly filling their buckets in the Similkameen River. And I watched that from the deck off our living room ! How cool is that ? ! ? Once their buckets were full they would climb as rapidly as possible over the top of the mountain across the river. They would be back with an empty bucket in just a few minutes, so I guess they were fighting a fire nearby. There was lots of thunder and lightning today, so perhaps a fire caused by lightning ?

Wednesday ; The helicopters were back at it this morning. Today was sunny and warm, chilly in the morning and late in the evening. Summer is winding down, fall is approaching.

I spent the day continuing to work on minor maintenance and home improvement projects. And I harvested more of our not very good lettuce.

Thursday ; BRRRRR ... today was sunny but cool !

Well ... it's been three long years but tonight Dan Air flight 408 finally took to the skies.
I spent the morning doing chores and maintenance and home improvement projects. In the afternoon I went to Penticton and ran errands. In the evening I went to the Penticton Flying Club and took their Cessna 172 C-GBFB ( Bravo Foxtrot Bravo ) for a "test drive".
I am contemplating buying a "share" of C-GBFB.

Great flight ! And my flying skills were nowhere near as "rusty" as I expected them to be.
I took off from Penticton, did a touch and go circuit, then headed north to Trout Creek at Summerland, turned into the Marron Valley, did some slow flight and steep turn exercises in the Marron Valley, flew out of the Marron Valley near Kaleden, flew over Skaha Lake to Oliver, did a touch and go at Oliver, then flew back to Penticton and landed. Three excellent landings, all with gusting crosswinds. Well done, Daniel !

Friday ; Today was sunny and mild. The hot summer is apparently over.

Had a long telephone chat with Joanne today. Cut shelving for the bathroom cupboard. Had a lot of help from my next door neighbour, whose carpentry skills far exceed mine. Which isn't difficult, mine are almost non-existent. Plus ... he's got all the nifty power tools. We used his expensive table saw with the even more expensive Melamine blade. Thank you very much, Gord.

Saturday ; Today was sunny and warm, very windy.

Took some Sun Oven dried tomatoes and banana chips to my next door neighbour as a bit of a thank you for his help. Accepted a cup of coffee and spent the morning chatting about RV travel in Mexico.

I Sun Oven dried a fresh pineapple cut into slices. It wasn't as good as I had hoped.

I spent much of today harvesting then cleaning produce from our tiny garden at lot 89 and planters on lot 4. Every year I think the same thing about gardening ; what a lot of work for very little produce. Why have I planted a garden for 35 of the last 38 years ? ! ? Did some raking and levelling yard work. I'm getting too old for shovelling rocks !

August 12 to 18, 2012

Sunday ; Another sunny, very hot day. Lots of complaining going on about the weather ... but not from me !

Built side yard fencing this afternoon. I must confess ... there were a few moments when working hard in the hot weather caused me a bit of nausea. I drink water or iced tea often, but ... I still get dehydrated. Continued work in the trailer removing and cleaning valances and day / night shades. Mounted towel bars in the new home's bathroom. Got tired of being nagged to mount the towel bars ! HA HA HA ! Late in the afternoon, after most of the wedding crowd had departed, we went to the pool to cool down. Barbecued supper included barbecued peach mint juleps. MMMMM ! Watched some of the Olympics closing ceremony.

Monday ; Still sunny and very hot.

Continued home improvement projects and trailer valance and day / night shade removal and cleaning.

Tuesday ; Still sunny and hot. Slept in a bit this morning. After lunch went to Penticton for an afternoon and evening of running errands and shopping. In the evening attended a meeting of the Penticton Flying Club. Might join as they now have a plane available for rental.

Wednesday ; Still sunny and hot. WOO-HOO !

Yesterday in Penticton I bought two whole salmon. Today while filleting them I cut off thin slices of the less desirable belly meat, and turned that into a lot of little pieces of "salmon sushi" for Bo and Sully. HA HA HA ... just like Eskimos feed their Husky dogs. Mush, Sully, mush ! HA HA HA HA HA !

I continued to sun dry fresh Roma tomatoes in the Sun Oven. I did an obedience training session with Bo. Good dog, Bo, well done. We continued working on removing, cleaning, and reinstalling the trailer's window valances and day / night shades. WHEW ... one more left to do ! I completed the side yard fencing. I worked on "ducting" our new portable air conditioner in the park model. I phoned the manufacturer of our exterior storm door to try to get a replacement part. I took and processed photos of the damaged door part to send to them by e-mail. I made an appointment for an aviation medical exam. I replaced a burnt out tail light bulb on the truck. Joanne did laundry. We cooled off in the pool before barbecuing supper. Joanne began to prepare for her upcoming trip to Winnipeg.
I completed our passport renewal applications.

Why are we so busy now that we have a "home" ? I think I'd rather be homeless.

Thursday ; Another sunny, very hot day. Perhaps the last of this summer season.

This morning we headed to Penticton. Similkameen Trailer Towing / I had been hired to deliver a large fifth wheel trailer from a storage facility to South Beach Gardens. It went smoothly. Might have gone even smoother if the client hadn't forgotten her trailer keys at her home in the Lower Mainland ( Vancouver area ). Fortunately we have "universal" trailer storage compartment keys. We were able to open all her exterior storage compartments, including the storage compartment where the switch for the front jacks is located. Without getting into that compartment, we would not have been able to raise and lower the front of the trailer for hitching to the truck. She had to call a locksmith to come to the campground to open her trailer door.

After delivering the trailer we went to Skaha Lake Beach Park for a late picnic lunch. After lunch we went to the Government of Canada Services Office to submit our passport renewal applications. Then the Government of British Columbia Services Office to get the address changed on both our driver's licenses and our BC Medical Services Plan cards. Then to our insurance agent to have the address changed on our truck and trailer insurance policies. Then thrift store shopping for home furnishings, and finally, some grocery shopping. At the grocery store I could not resist the temptation to buy another fresh, whole salmon. I am planning to try making sun dried salmon and sun dried candied salmon in the Sun Oven. Wish me luck.

Friday ; Well ... still sunny and very hot !

Late last night after a bit of Internet research I "invented" a candied salmon marinade.
I cooked up a batch and left half a salmon soaking in the marinade in the fridge overnight. This morning I set up the Sun Oven and put my marinated salmon in it to sun dry all day. As the sun dipped behind the mountain across the river late this afternoon, I removed it from the Sun Oven and ... Daniel's Candied Salmon ! WOW ... it's excellent ! It's so good Joanne is taking some to eat on the long bus ride from Keremeos to Winnipeg that starts tomorrow morning at 5 AM.

This afternoon a neighbour brought over a bottle of white wine to "welcome us to the neighbourhood". The three of us sat down and promptly drank it. Very nice unoaked pinot grigio from a winery in Oliver. Thank you, Darlene.

This morning I reassembled and reinstalled the storm ( screen ) door on the park model after repairing the damaged section of bottom frame. I had removed and disassembled the door in an attempt to obtain a replacement part, and then I attempted to repair the damaged part. My repair was more successful than I had anticipated, so ...
I reassembled and reinstalled the door while I continue to try to obtain a replacement part. If I fail to obtain the replacement part ... that's okay, my repair will be good enough.

I did the 198,000 km. inspection on Lanoire today. What a great truck ! I also reinstalled the last of the trailer's now cleaned day / night shades and valances. WHEW ... that was a tough job, removing, cleaning, and reinstalling all the valances and day / night shades. But ... Harvey the fifth wheel continues to be in excellent condition for a 14 year old trailer ! Time for him to permanently retire to our Yuma RV lot soon, methinks, now that we have a "real" home here. Perhaps one more winter in Mexico, then we'll leave him in Yuma ? He needs a new sofa and dinette suite, though.

Saturday ; Another sunny and extremely hot day, temperature about 100 degrees.

BUT ... only 68 degrees when we left home at 4:30 AM heading into Keremeos for 4:45 AM to put Joanne on the 5:05 AM Greyhound bus to Winnipeg. The bus was 35 minutes late so we sat waiting and worrying for almost an hour. It will take Joanne about 40 hours of bus travel to get to Winnipeg. Goodbye, dear, I will miss you. Have a good visit with your sister.

This afternoon I headed to Princeton for the 5th annual Princeton Traditional Music Festival. And am I ever glad that I did. It was great ! I'm going again tomorrow. This afternoon I attended performances by a Slovenian accordion player, a blues workshop, a Slovenian folk dance group, a Turkish Gypsy cabaret band, and a Serbian / Macedonian wedding orchestra. WOW ! As can be readily seen, this year's theme is Eastern European music. The highlight for me was the irreverent Turkish Gypsy band performing their song "I really don't give a ***k". HA HA HA ... it was great dance music !

August 5 to 11, 2012

Sunday ; WHEW ... a very hot day, temperature around 100 degrees ! Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, depending on whose weather report you believe.

Late this morning we drove into Keremeos to attend "Kars Under The K" in Memorial Park, the annual antique and classic car show in town. Joanne would not let me buy the 1959 Edsel with the metal flake paint job. I really like Edsels. I really like metal flake paint jobs. I can afford the Edsel. Other old rich guys get to have classic cars ( pouting ).

Today we used our new house portable air conditioner for the first time. It worked reasonably well. It was a bit of a struggle given the high outside temperature.

I bought a beef roast today and broiled it in the Sun Oven. First time I tried "broiling" in the Sun Oven. I thought that perhaps I had dried the meat out leaving it in the Sun Oven a bit too long, but tonight Joanne carved it into thin slices and it was very nice !

Monday ; Another sunny, very hot day, but with a brief violent thunderstorm in
mid-afternoon.

Today we moved the composter ( and its contents ) from lot 89 to lot 4. I dismantled our composter on lot 89 then reassembled it on lot 4 behind the house. We shovelled the compost into a wheelbarrow and moved it to lot 4 where Joanne put it into the new herb garden she built this afternoon beside the house using the copper rocks we picked near Princeton a couple of weeks ago. Very nice rock garden border, dear. Very nice compost ! Late this afternoon I spray painted the trailer's stove cover, changing the colour from white to black. HMPH ... black spay paint seems to be a bit more "forgiving" than white spray paint. Who knew ? !

Tuesday ; Another long, hard, hot day of running errands in Penticton. Mostly shopping for "home improvement" project materials. I'm buying the materials faster than I can do the projects ! I now have enough materials to last me many weeks of work projects !

As we drove through Keremeos I stopped at the Village Office to pick up a free "energy savings kit" provided by Fortis BC, our electrical service provider. The free kit includes a low flow shower head, a low flow faucet aerator, and a low flow swivel faucet aerator. What I really wanted was the swivel faucet aerator for our bathroom faucet. I also installed the ( non-swivel ) low flow aerator on our kitchen faucet. The low flow shower head goes to a bargain table, I guess.

While we were out shopping in Penticton I left peach slices and cherry halves to sun dry in the Sun Oven. The cherries are good, I'm not thrilled with the dried peaches. Joanne thinks they're too dry, left in the Sun Oven too long. Guess we'll try again.

Wednesday ; "Ain't nothin' better in the world, you know ... than lyin' in the sun with your ray-ay-dee-o"

Today was sunny and hot. This morning I did a minor repair on a neighbour's fifth wheel trailer. This afternoon we went to Penticton again to continue shopping for furnishings, and to attend a rock concert at PeachFest in the evening.

Driving between Riverside RV Park Resort and Keremeos I had to come to a complete stop on the highway while a flock of Bighorn Sheep tried to decide which side of the highway they wanted to be on. Indecisive creatures ! ! ! Then, between Olalla and Twin Lakes, as I approached a triathlon training cyclist on the highway, a deer jumped up out of the ditch right in front of the cyclist, and began to run alongside the highway, on the shoulder, right in front of the cyclist. I braked heavily, not knowing whether the deer would jump out in front of me, or the cyclist would veer out in front of me, or ... ? ? ? Sure enough, as I slowly overtook the cyclist, the damn deer decided to cross the road. Just about took out a deer and a cyclist in one fell swoop !

We ran some errands in Penticton, and did some shopping for furnishings. Bought a pair of bedroom table lamps, and a coffee table for the living room. We drove to Lakeshore Park, the centre of PeachFest activities, and found an excellent parking spot. We set up our folding chairs in the park for the concert later in the evening, then walked a few blocks over to a nearby Chinese restaurant for an excellent AYCE ( ETYS ) seafood buffet dinner.

After supper we walked back to Lakeshore Park, watched a Vancouver based cover band perform, then walked around the park waiting for the Lighthouse concert to begin. Sultry hot summer evening in Lakeshore Park, cool breeze blowing in off Okanagan Lake, Canadian classic rock icons Lighthouse performing their Juno award winning hits of the 70's. I had a lot of fun singing along very loudly and very off key. Who cares ? ! It's an outdoor rock concert ! Made me wanna spark a doobie. HA HA HA !

The concert didn't end until about 11:30 PM, and we didn't get home until about 12:30. We're too old to be out that late ! Twice on the drive home deer popped up out of the ditch. SHEESH !

Thursday ; This morning I did a minor repair job on a neighbour's golf cart. I was too lazy to do the job safely, and only a great deal of luck prevented me from being injured when the golf cart fell off the jack. There's a moral in there somewhere !

Another sunny, hot day. We both spent the day working on a variety of home improvement projects. I guess that will be the "story of my life" for the next little while.

Friday ; Another sunny, hot day. Just the way I like it !

Another day of home improvement projects with a dog bath and some trailer maintenance thrown in. Starting yesterday, every day now I remove a trailer window's valance and day / night shade, Joanne washes the valance, we work together to wash the day / night shade, hang it to dry in the sun on our new retractable clothesline, and then I reinstall the day / night shade and valance. That's a lot of work !

Saturday ; And yet another sunny, hot day.

Riverside RV Park Resort was occupied with the wedding that took place here today. The daughter of a neighbour was married here today in our lovely riverfront orchard area. It was the neighbour's second daughter to get married here.

We didn't attend the afternoon wedding ceremony or evening banquet. We spent the day continuing our "home improvement" projects. In the evening we attended a performance of Shakespeare's As You Like It performed by the Penticton Chamber Theatre group on the lovely grounds of the historic Keremeos Grist Mill.

July 29 to August 4, 2012

Sunday ; Another sunny, hot day, just the way I like it !

Our move from the fifth wheel trailer into the park model manufactured home continues. We're both amazed at how much non-perishable food stuff was in the trailer ! I do not want to be moving into and out of the trailer every six months. I want to leave almost everything in the park model when we depart for the south in the fall. We can replenish / replace whatever we need as we travel. Lord knows we stop at Wal-Marts often enough !

This morning we loaded into the truck the pile of junk we hauled out from underneath the steps landing and deck. And then we loaded up a neighbour's construction debris ( we owe him some favours ) and headed for the Keremeos dump. It's only open on Sundays, and only for half a day. WOW ... busy place ! We ran some errands in town. WOW ... busy place ! Sunday afternoon on a peak summer weekend, lots of tourist traffic passing through town and shopping at the local produce stands. Peaches are in ! Potatoes are in ... and cheap ! Green beans are in ... and an excellent crop this year ! Blueberries from the Lower Mainland are in. Another excellent crop this year ! WOO-HOO ... patty pan squash are in. MMMMM ... love 'em barbecued. Bought half a dozen. Short season for patty pan squash, might not be any more next time we're in town.

It's also fresh salmon season. I bought a whole salmon today at the grocery store. While I filleted it at home this afternoon ... < whispering > ... Bo and Sully both got a bit of "salmon sushi". HA HA HA ! They both loved it !

This afternoon while Joanne moved stuff from the trailer into the park model I began to work on maintenance on the park model. The manufactured home is six years old and has never been occupied in all that time. There's a bit of "neglect" maintenance required. Plus ... you know ... I'm a bit fussy / OCD. This afternoon I worked on four access hatches ( one under the front of the home, one under the rear of the home, one under the deck, and one under the steps landing ), doing a bit of refurbishment on them, and attaching handles and barrel bolts.

Spent some time cooling off in the pool before barbecuing supper. After supper went bicycling around the park for awhile then over to lot 89 to water gardens and planters and bushes and trees.

Monday ; WHEW ... hot, long, hard day of running errands and shopping in Penticton. We bought a lot of home furnishings and accessories. Almost of all it bought at two thrift stores.

Tuesday ; Happy 51st Birthday to my brother, Russell

By coincidence more than design, for supper tonight we had a recipe given to us by my brother many years ago. Salmon covered with dry mustard and brown sugar, wrapped in foil, and barbecued. Very good !

Today was sunny and hot again. For the second day in a row, I used the Sun Oven to make banana chips. Today's batch was slightly better than yesterday's.

The move from lot 89 to lot 4, and from the trailer into the park model continues. Today I created a parking spot defined by "Yuma fencing", concrete blocks with landscaping ties as rails.

For the second day in a row a neighbour dropped by with a "welcome to the neighbourhood" gift. In both cases the gifts were "home made". How nice. Thank you, Betty and Darlene.

We spent some time late this afternoon chatting with a couple from Alberta who were "shopping" in our park and were interested in lot 89. They are currently vacationing in Penticton. She wants our lot, he doesn't seem ready. He's a year and a half away from retirement. We'll see how it goes, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

Wednesday ; Another sunny, hot day. Joanne cooked a superb chicken and rice dinner in the Sun Oven. A new recipe, and definitely a "keeper".

Today we moved some of our larger items from lot 89 to lot 4. The swing, the picnic table with its market umbrella and umbrella base, most of the wood planters. Everything is coming together very nicely on lot 4. Two of the wood planters will have to remain on lot 89 until it's sold, or until the fall. One of them needs to be emptied and rebuilt / reinforced before moving. The other needs to be emptied before moving because it's just too heavy to lift while it's full of soil.

We picked a pail full of Transparent Apples today from the tree in our park's orchard. Transparent Apples are ripe long before most of the other apple types. They're sour tasting, but Joanne likes to make apple sauce with them.

Thursday ; Another sunny, hot day.

My main accomplishment today was relocating our satellite dish from lot 89 to lot 4.
I removed the satellite dish from the side of the gazebo and all the cabling that I had run along the base of the gazebo. I remounted the satellite dish on the eave at the edge of the roof of the park model. Tomorrow I will tackle the job of getting the cabling from the dish on the edge of the roof to the TV in the living room.

Friday ; Still sunny and hot.

My work plans for today were somewhat derailed by drop in visitors and an invitation to a late afternoon "Happy Hour".

I did manage to get some minor "home improvement" projects accomplished, but my main objective for today ... install the satellite dish cabling ... did not get done. We visited with some neighbours on our deck and late in the afternoon went to Happy Hour at another neighbour's.

We spent the evening at the Hedley Summer Street Party. Hedley is such an interesting and eclectic little town ! Tonight the main street was blocked off. Banquet tables and chairs were set up. Huge quantities of chicken were barbecued. There were lots of really good, home made side dishes and salads served. After the great barbecued chicken dinner, a blues band set up on the flat bed trailer serving as a stage. Lazy Mike and The Rockin' Recliners from Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Very good blues band on their way east to the Rock Creek Blues Festival which starts tomorrow. It was a lovely, very warm evening. We sat in our folding chairs, listening to the blues band, watching the sun set on Stemwinder Mountain. < contented sigh > I like living here !

Saturday ; Still sunny and hot !

Today marks three years since Teddy's death.

We had more neighbours come by for a visit and "tour" of our new home today. Joanne and I both worked on patching, sanding, and staining the spots on lot 89's gazebo where the satellite dish was mounted and where the cabling was routed and clipped. And this afternoon, after much procrastination and dread, I installed the satellite dish cable in our new home. Getting the cable from the satellite dish to the TV is easy for an installation technician. They just drill a half inch hole through the wall wherever it's convenient for them to do so. I ran the cable from the satellite dish down the exterior wall behind a corner moulding, then drilled carefully through the corner of the skirting to get the cable underneath the home. I crawled through the access hatch and all the way underneath the home to the corner where I had inserted the cable ( good thing I'm not claustrophobic ! ), then routed it underneath to where I wanted it to enter the living room. Then came the tough part ! With considerable difficulty I got a hole drilled from underneath up into the living room against the wall where I wanted the cable to be. Some patching and sealing inside, outside, and underneath, and I was done. WHEW ... tough job ... if one is as fussy / OCD as I am !

After a late supper we went to the pool to cool off at the same time as doing laundry.
I didn't stay long. I'm too old and cranky to want to share the pool with the many long weekend guests and their many small children. I wonder how much larger we can possibly print on the pool doors "PLEASE SHOWER BEFORE ENTERING POOL" before these weekend guests of residents start to pay attention to our rules ... and comply with them. Oh, wait ... I forgot ... rules are for someone else ! ! !
