March 13 to 19, 2016

Sunday ; Sunny and hot.

This morning we turned the Welcome Committee golf cart over to this week's volunteer. Our week as the Welcome Committee is over. Right after lunch we headed to Woodard High School for a matinee performance by Yuma Community Theater of the play "Lend Me A Tenor". HA HA HA ... one of YCT's better performances. After the play we went shopping at Harbor Freight. And ... as usual ... squabbled briefly about it. Joanne hates Harbor Freight shopping trips.

After Harbor Freight we went for an early supper at Del Taco. On the way home we stopped at Albertsons to buy some orange juice. We arrived home at Kofa Ko-op just a few minutes after 6 PM, and immediately headed to the clubhouse for the ice cream social which was underway. After the ice cream social we chatted for awhile with a newly arrived couple from Alberta and old friends from Texas.

In the evening I posted my weekly journal entry to my blog, including ... < sigh > ... deleting Sully's picture.

Monday ; Sunny and hot. Joanne cooked a marinated pot roast in the Sun Oven today.

I am having some lazy days this week due to a persistent back ache. This morning I did routine household chores. With Joanne's help to do the "heavy lifting" parts. We began to slowly prepare for departure in a couple of weeks, beginning to sort and pack stuff that needs to head back home with us. We did some spring cleaning in the shed. We walked Bo around the dog park. We said "farewell" to our friends Carol Mae and Larry who are leaving tomorrow.

 Tuesday ; Sunny and hot.

This morning after routine chores I did some work preparing for departure in a couple of weeks. After lunch we headed to the Humane Society for our regular Tuesday afternoon shift of cat cuddling and dog walking. From the Humane Society we headed to The Foothills so that I could buy a couple of items at Al's RV Service & Supply and refill with diesel at Fry's Fuel Bar.

Back at home we took Bo for a two lap walk around the dog park, accompanied by his new pack, Mia and Snickers. Afterwards we did some minor repairs in the Arizona room as darkness set in.

I made an interesting supper tonight. Grilled, seasoned Portobello mushrooms, fried eggs on top, served on toast, all drenched with Crema CentroAmericana. MMMMM ! ! ! Sometimes my meal creations are just GREAT ! HA HA HA !

Wednesday ; Sunny and hot, an absolutely beautiful spring day in the desert. Joanne cooked a Thai Chicken recipe in the Sun Oven today.

This morning we attended a planning meeting of the Welcome Committee in the clubhouse. As soon as the meeting was finished I headed to Lowe's to buy a screen door latch. Joanne remained in the clubhouse to work on a Welcome Committee project.

After lunch I installed the screen door latch on the Arizona room's front door. It did not go as smoothly as I would have liked. I installed a new shower head mounting bracket on the shower stall wall. And I installed a new grey tank valve handle access hatch. Lots of minor repairs !

We walked around the dog park with Bo. I went bicycling at sunset. Supper was excellent ! In the evening we watched Survivor and Hell's Kitchen on TV.

Thursday ; St. Patrick's Day

Sunny and hot. Of course !

Joanne went shopping for groceries by herself this morning. I baked ( made hard boiled ) eggs in the Sun Oven while she was gone. And made lunch for myself. And napped. HA HA HA ... busy morning and early afternoon !

This afternoon I finished taking inventory of all medications, to know what to leave in the trailer, what to pack into the truck camper, what needs to be bought in Mexico before we leave, etc.

Late in the afternoon we headed to the clubhouse for the St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner. < shrug > It was okay ... a bit mediocre, perhaps. And, as is often the case with Kofa Ko-op's communal dinners, it was severely afflicted by "eat and run". After dinner we went to say goodbye to our dear friends Hans and Peta, "original" Escapee friends of ours from Ontario, and the "owners" of Kofi, the kitten that we rescued here and they adopted a little more than three years ago. They are leaving tomorrow morning.

WELL ! HMPH ! ! ! Joanne has just discovered ( around 10 PM ) the undesired results of me leaving the eggs in the Sun Oven twice as long as I should have. The whites became nothing more than shrivelled brown films wrapped around rubbery yokes. Who knew ? ! ?

Friday ; Sunny and very hot, temperature in the mid 90's F / mid 30's C.

This morning I puttered around with routine household chores. And ... finally ... after a week or more of back pain, my minor back injury has healed, and I was pain free. I felt "back healthy" enough to chop some firewood in our back yard today, to take to Quartzsite when we leave so that we can have a campfire and wiener roast.

This afternoon our next door neighbour hosted a "street party" in honour of his wife's 65th birthday today. Our street was closed to traffic. John set up umbrellas and lawn chairs on the street. Many of the park's residents brought potluck contributions. John provided a lot of fried chicken from Albertsons, a local grocery supermarket. John is an accomplished musician, and provided the musical entertainment. Thank you for the great street party and meal, John. Happy Birthday, Jeannie.

Because of the heat and intense sunlight, a small group of the party migrated first to our front patio, and then into our Arizona room as the group grew larger. So ... we had our own "sub-party" that continued long after the main party was over. HA HA HA ! We even had a dog party going on in the Arizona room, with Bo and his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel friends Molly and Rocky.

Late this afternoon we were thrilled to see the arrival of our dear friends and neighbours from three sites down, Cathy and Jim. We haven't seen them in a year. Jim has had Alzheimer's for the past few years. And Cathy had a severe stroke this fall while they were on a cruise to Hawaii. We haven't had much news on her condition. A cousin of hers drove them here for a week long visit. And Cathy's recovery has been impressive. She no longer has any physical mobility impairment. She has some speech impairment. And a bit of verbal impairment to go along with the speech impairment. BUT ... overall, a pretty remarkable recovery. She's the second friend of ours to suffer a severe stroke in the last year, both with quite remarkable recovery in a relatively short period of time.

Welcome "home", Cathy and Jim. Great to see you !

As it became dark we were visited by some visitors that we chatted with over St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner yesterday. They came over to get a "dog fix". Bo was thrilled to have visitors in our Arizona room AGAIN ! "WOO-HOO ... everybody loves me" thinks Bo.

Saturday ; Sunny and very hot.

This morning I was on my way over to see Laszlo and Gail to ask for a favour when our neighbour Cathy flagged me down to ask for my help with a problem in their almost new trailer. The lights in half the trailer would not work last night. Including ... no lights working in the bedroom and bathroom. It took me awhile to resolve the lighting problems, because ... there was more than one problem, but eventually I got everything fixed. Then ... I spent way too long visiting with Laszlo and Gail.

We had a late lunch then left to run some shopping errands in The Foothills. Primary destination was Goodwill Thrift Store. WOO-HOO ... everything 50% off today. After shopping at Goodwill ... we each bought one item ... we went to Green Tree Grocery Outlet to buy some "scratch & dent" food items.

Back at home we did some annual trailer maintenance chores. The unpleasant ones that I dislike doing. Power flush wand cleaning inside the toilet underneath the flush valve, and back flushing each of the three waste holding tanks. Afterwards we took Bo for a walk around the dog park. I went for a long bicycle ride at sunset. Too long !

In the evening I did some accounting and bill paying.
